Every morning, my early-bird son and I have interesting conversations. For example, as I was putting on my make up on Tuesday morning, Aidan came into the bathroom to well, use the bathroom. He said to me, "You know, Mommy, you don't have a penis." Sigh. Yes, he seems to be obsessed with who has or doesn't have a phallis. At any rate, he said something that worried me a little. He told me that his teacher at pre-school doesn't have a penis. I came down to his level and tried to explain that we call them "private parts" for a reason, and we don't talk about them in public. I also tried to emphasize that he should NOT talk to his teacher about this topic.
Fast forward to when Mike and I picked the kids up from school. I quietly asked Aidan's teacher if he had asked about her about any body parts today. She erupted in laughter as she explained that Aidan informed her of her lack of a penis the day before. She said she didn't know what to say, so she just kept a straight face and acted like she didn't hear him as she walked by. He didn't bring it up again, thankfully.
This morning, Aidan whispered his usual greeting from snuggled inside our warm covers: "I love you, Mommy." And then it was, "Do you know that it is almost time for Santa? He's coming for Jesus' birthday." After a pause he asked me a classic Aidan question: "How old will God be on His birthday?"
Uhhhhh......a tough one to explain, and keep in mind this was 5:30 in the morning. I settled for, "He's just always been here and will always been." Aidan seemed satisfied with that. :)

How many soon to be four year olds would attribute Santa's arrival to the birth of Jesus? Aidan's inquistive nature is a reflection of/testament to the positive influence and teachings of his parents. As you have already stated, Christmas is about the presence, not the presents. As I drive around this time of year and witness the harried people in the search of the perfect gift, I will think of Aidan's appreciation of what this special time of year should truly be - a reminder of why the day is called Christmas. Great answer to Aidan's question, Denise!
